Bioma Cerrado

An unprecedented study conducted by Brazilian researchers from EMBRAPA/NIST-EngBio revealed the diversity of microorganisms associated with the soil, roots and rhizosphere of plants in the Jardim de Maytrea, in the Cerrado. The work, one of the most comprehensive ever conducted in the region, identified bacteria and archaea that may have applications in biotechnology, sustainable agriculture, resilience and environmental conservation.

The samples were collected at different points and seasons of the year, including drought-resistant plants and species that maintain their hydration even in dry periods. The data can serve as a basis for research into bioinputs, recovery of degraded soils and adaptation of crops to climate change. The Cerrado, known for its extreme conditions, such as nutrient-poor soils and long periods of drought, is home to plants with unique survival strategies.
