Biosafety & Biosecurity
The Core Concepts In a laboratory setting, it is essential to distinguish between biosafety and biosecurity. Biosafety refers to the implementation of specific laboratory practices, safety equipment, and facility design to protect workers and the environment from accidental exposure to infectious agents. On the other hand, biosecurity focuses on the protection, control, and accountability of biological materials within the facility to prevent their loss, theft, misuse, or intentional release. Together, these frameworks ensure that scientific research is conducted responsibly and safely

Biosafety Cabinets (BSCs) for procedures that might create splashes or aerosols. Handwashing sinks and decontamination methods, such as autoclaves, are also mandatory to maintain a sterile and contained environment

Operational Protocols Operationally, working in a NB2 lab demands strict adherence to Standard Microbiological Practices. Personnel must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including lab coats, gloves, and eye protection. Access to the laboratory is typically restricted when work is in progress. From a biosecurity standpoint, this involves maintaining an accurate inventory of biological samples and ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the facility, thereby minimizing the risk of internal and external threats.
